Hello!
I am Emma Southgate. Counselling Psychologist, Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Mindfulness Teacher
At times we can understandably feel confused, anxious, unable to cope and unsure what to do. It can be difficult to reach out for support but through a compassionate and curious approach I aim to help people make sense of their emotional life, enabling them to better understand what is happening.
This in itself can feel like a relief but psychological therapy offers an opportunity to make changes to our thinking and behaviour patterns, so we can manage the challenges of life whilst increasing a sense of pleasure, appreciation and meaning in our lives.
I believe in an individualised approach to therapy and that building a collaborative therapeutic relationship is the foundation to psychological change. I have trained in a wide range of approaches but specialise in Mindfulness Based Approaches and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Over the past 20 years I have worked in the NHS and in private practice. I have also worked for large organisations and charities.
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS), an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (AFBPsS) and a registered practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
I am a fully accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist registered with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP) and a Mindfulness Teacher registered with the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA).
I have private indemnity insurance, an enhanced DBS check and receive clinical supervision for all client work and work in accordance with the guidelines outlined by the relevant governing bodies.
Anxiety Difficulties (including generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, health anxiety and social anxiety)
Mood Problems (including depression and recurrent depression)
Stress and Adjustment Disorders (including acute stress as a result of life events, relationships, work & loss)
Trauma (including acute stress reactions, post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic grief)
Those managing long term health conditions
I also work with people who specifically wish to learn Mindfulness as a skill to improve well-being and resilience to stress or as a means to help reduce the risk of recurrence of depression.
I believe finding the right therapist is extremely important. If you think I might be someone you would like to consider working with please do contact me and we can arrange a free 30 minute talk to discuss any questions you may have and ascertain whether I am the most appropriate person to meet your needs.
I conduct all my therapy on line (via Skype or Zoom) or over the phone. Our first session is an assessment where we can explore your current difficulties and ascertain your hopes for therapy. We will also talk through the terms of our working relationship. Each session is 50 minutes and I tend to work with people on a time limited basis (between 6-25 sessions) as I believe one of the important aims of therapy is empowering you to be your own therapist. Sessions tend to be weekly to begin with however over time we may decide a longer time between sessions may be more appropriate.
As with psychological therapy I conduct all mindfulness teaching sessions on line (via Skype or Zoom). An assessment is the starting point to ensure mindfulness is the most appropriate approach for you at this time. The sessions run weekly for either 6 weeks (for well-being and stress) or 8 weeks (for recurrent depression) plus a follow-up session.
In private practice I cannot work with clients where there is a high level of risk (for example if someone is regularly suicidal, self-harming, violent or requires in-patient care) as the level of care and support I can offer in private therapy would not be enough, therefore it would be inappropriate for me to offer this.
My fees are £120 per hour for self funded therapy. I also work with people funded through the following private medical insurers: BUPA; AVIVA; WPA; CIGNA; VITALITY.
